Yacht Trace at Lloyds London Superyacht Insurance for Tenders and Chase Boats

Lloyds London Superyacht Towing Panel discussion 1 October 2026 with Dr Dan Rogers Yacht Trace

The technology now exists – so why so many tender losses? One of the questions raised at the Joint Hull Committee Yacht Subcommittee’s annual Yacht Forum at Lloyd’s, London, where the focus was superyacht tender towing, risk and loss prevention.

Claims figures certainly gave context to the discussion.
ABL Yachts’ reported just a small snapshot of one company’s data (in 5 years):
47 tender claims
Around US$13.5m in losses
An average claim of approximately US$287,000
Towing-related claims are the dominant loss driver
Flooding, capsizing while under tow and fire account for the largest losses. (AIS doesn’t help)

The majority could potentially have been prevented…..

The discussion explored the whole risk picture: crew training, towing equipment, SOPs, maintenance, tender design, weather, insurance, monitoring systems and early intervention.

Lack of uptake to technology comes down to inertia and confusion over what “monitoring” actually means. Historically, tender technology has often been associated with anti-theft tracking. But knowing where a tender is isn’t the same as knowing what is happening to it.

Advanced tow-protection systems can provide information about developing conditions onboard, giving crew an opportunity to respond before an incident becomes a major loss.

Insurance may also have an important part to play. Some insurers specify the functionality required from advanced monitoring, while others go further and name accepted systems, making the requirement much clearer for clients.

Many insurers will offer lower deductibles and extend their allowances for towing such as at night, away from shore and over 50nm.

A huge thank you to Emily Grew for organising the forum and Matt Halpin for moderating the discussion, the yacht and hull insurance community and to the panel:
Dr. Dan Rogers Dan Rogers — Founder & CTO, Yacht Trace
Paul Saunders — Head of Yachts & Principal Surveyor, ABL Yachts
Dale Rogers — COO, Tow Pro
Adam Jackson — Managing Director & Principal Surveyor, Assure Maritime
Captain Billy Stevens — Superyacht Captain, MCA Master 3,000 GT

👉 I’ve put together the attached article with the claims data and some of the key points raised during the forum.

➡️ Welcome to share and repost ⏩ – it is a very comprehensive guide to what was discussed and the knowledge given by the expert panel.
▶️ A topic where there needs to be greater awareness across the whole industry.

💡 Interestingly beyond towing. A number of Yacht Trace clients just want to know the health and status of their tenders and Jet Skis in order to prevent loss even when not towing.

Yacht Trace Technology Superyacht Show

Newsletter March

From Southampton to Barcelona – A Busy Month of Connections, Technology and Innovation

March has been another exciting month for Yacht Trace, bringing together some fantastic industry events, valuable conversations and opportunities to share how technology can help improve tender and chase boat safety.

From the glamour of the Superyacht Charities Ball to the latest innovations at the Superyacht Technology Show in Barcelona, it’s been a busy few weeks!

Superyacht Charities Ball – Southampton

We started with a fantastic evening at the Superyacht Charities Ball on 14 March, held at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

It was wonderful to catch up with familiar faces, meet new people and see so many from across the superyacht industry coming together to support worthwhile causes.

Yacht Trace was delighted to contribute to the fundraising raffle, supporting the fantastic work of Superyacht Charities.

A huge thank you to the organisers, sponsors and everyone involved in making it such a memorable evening.

Superyacht Technology Show – Barcelona

Next stop, Barcelona, for the Superyacht Technology Show 2026.

The event brought together technology specialists, innovators and industry professionals to explore the latest developments shaping the future of superyachting.

For Yacht Trace, it was a valuable opportunity to discuss the growing importance of preventative technology, particularly in relation to tender and chase boat monitoring, risk reduction and fleet management.

Our standalone, encrypted two-way RF system provides continuous communication between the mothership and its tenders without relying on AIS or cellular connectivity.

It was encouraging to have conversations around how dedicated monitoring can support captains, engineers, yacht managers and insurers in identifying potential problems before they become costly losses.

A big thank you to the organisers and everyone we had the pleasure of meeting.

Visiting MB92 Barcelona

While in Barcelona, we also had the opportunity to visit MB92, one of the world’s leading superyacht refit and repair facilities.

It was a fantastic opportunity to experience another side of the industry and gain a greater understanding of the scale, technical expertise and coordination involved in major superyacht refit operations.

Visits like these are particularly valuable to us as we continue developing Yacht Trace technology and exploring how our monitoring systems can support the evolving needs of the superyacht fleet.

Thank you to the MB92 team for the opportunity to visit.

Looking Ahead

March has reinforced just how important collaboration is across our industry.

Whether speaking with captains, engineers, yacht managers, shipyards or insurers, we’re seeing growing interest in proactive monitoring and technology that helps reduce risk rather than simply responding after something has gone wrong.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to meet us, share their experiences and support Yacht Trace.

Here’s to another busy few months ahead!

AIS and Trackers do not protect a tender being towed

Trackers and AIS When Towing Tenders Is Not Adequate protection
